and point goes to utah
so when cyclists are run over by cars in texas and nothing really happens to the driver and no actions are taken by the city/state government....we just shrug and go, hm..o well? really? recently a settlement was reached in the death of a cyclist in utah and with it:
Josie's death sparked the passage of a Utah law requiring motorists to give three feet of space to bicycles, as well as numerous "Share the Road" signs, a video on bicycle safety circulated in the public schools, consideration in the planning of road construction for the needs of bicyclists and an annual memorial bicycle ride in the Salt Lake area, scheduled this year for Oct. 7. "Josie lives on," Johnson said, "and those things are positive."want to sit outside in this awesome fall-like weather and watch a movie tonite? simon is showing CENTURY OF THE SELF, episodes 3 & 4 at 8pm as part of the Sustainable Living Movie Nites. info:

reading is fundamental. i have had this book for a few years, and finally getting around to sitting down and reading - The Immortal Class. Bike Messengers and the Cult of Human Power. i'm not very far into it. but, i liked this paragraph in his introduction. although, its a little dramatic. i dunno. maybe these times call for dramatic statements:
What these people don't know is that the bicycle is more than a sport and more than a job. The bicycle is a revolution, an assault on civilian territory, intent upon taking, from the ground up, responsibility for the shape of our cities. It is a mutiny, challenging the ever-one-way street. The bicycle is a philosophy, a way of life, and I am using it like a hammer to change the world and to redeem our war-torn cities. by: Travis Hugh Culley

bike take over linky no worky
Josie's death sparked the passage of a Utah law requiring motorists to give three feet of space to bicycles...
Didn't Austin have a similar ordinance enacted several years ago?
Note: You should check out all the cycling fatalities going down in the NYC/Brooklyn area!
dang - how can we have a bike take over if no one can get to the link. ok: fixed. thank you!
yes...i have heard this rumor too. i can't find any mention that this passed. i know it was recently discussed and maybe even put to vote.....but as far as i can tell right now: we dont have this law in effect.
i read about the recent 2 couriers that went down. and then a couple more a while back due to construction. sick. stay upright mr. IDT. :-)
I've read "The Immortal Class" a couple of times, and I've enjoyed it despite its tendency toward hyperbole. It's not quite "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence", but it's as close as we have, right now.
Let us know what you think, once you have finished.

the 3 foot law was shot down by the TX lege last year. It is curently being pushed again by the Texas Bicycle Coalition, who'll likely get it passed. It's not a cure all. In Utah it is only used after an accident. Don't expect it to be any better if it passes in texas, but it's a start I guess.
What we really need to do is rewrite the transportation code and drivers manual and drivers education to explicitly reflect :
1. Bicycles are not out of place on the roadway, they have the same rights as motor vehicles.
2. Bicycles have full use of the lane
3. Pass a Bicycle as you would pass any other vehicle.
Utah wrote this stuff into it's driver's manual as well.
thanks for your comments all. and for the info on the passing law stuff. you make very good points here and i hope they can be implemented. lets make it happen.
jon i will let u know on the book. im enjoying it so far.
