PSA: yellow bike release
eastside lee and yellow bikes rolled up last nite outside of wheatsville with 2 truckloads of bikes. they lined them up and set them free. we were grabbing something to eat before bike-in movie. so that was really cool to see. then, this guy took off on one. if you aren't familiar with the program, yellow bikes takes donated bikes and refurbishes them, paints them yellow and releases them to the city of austin. anyone can come up on one, jump on it and ride to their destination and leave it for the next person.
yellow bikes is a underground hero of mine. thank you to the good people there. it is also a open bike shop. you can take your bike in and use their tools to work on your bike. you will find knowledgeable people there that can help you out also. put some time in the shop too. they are always looking for people to work on bikes. right now, it looks like their big need is a new location. their building at the old airport is slated for demolition. go to their newly designed and beautiful website to learn more about them and how you can get involved. we are very fortunate that they are part of our community.
the release lineup.
your a champion when u ride a yellow bike. this guy is about to become a champion. tell your friends...
we then sat outside in the august heat and watched simon's bike-in movie up against waterloo cycles wall: need for speed. set in the early 90's it is a documentary of NYC bike messengers. i highly recommend it for style points alone. there is a madonna look-a-like badass messenger and a former chippendale dancer messenger. and a group that calls themselves the xmen and dress in full body amour. lots of brightly colored spandex. metro was there and i told him i expect to see some of these wardrobe ideas worked into his messenger fashion collection.
*** keep riding bikes. we have a big week coming up with the helmut law going to vote on THURSDAY, AUG. 24 and b.todd "biking is a privilege, not a right" retching up his cowbell of bullshit..
much to do before then. see u in the trenches.

did u ever get my care package
i just received the package of sticker love!!
the YELLOW BIKE stuff is cool....
but
I fear it would not work here in Washington DC
reason one: people are selfish
people would take the bikes and keep them
they would take as many of them as they could
and they would not leave them for others to use'
reason two: people are letigious assholes
someone would get hit or hurt on a yellow bike and they would sue whoever put that bike out there
