my shirts stink sometimes
thats the breaks when u are a bike commuter. nobody's ever said anything to me about it. but maybe they think it. hmmmm. i kinda assume everybody in texas stinks a little cuz its so hot here. im used to stinky bikers - and i kinda dig it. thats my peoples. it means you took a less traveled road. there's a bit of pride in sweat i think. however you earn it. there should be no shame in a well earned sweat.
i sweated (i dunno if that is a word) some on tuesday. rode out south on my 30mile south austin loop, as i call it. a stiff south wind made it tough on the way out. but then helped me along on the way back. nevertheless, i was wiped. which is what i like.
i'm laying down with the computer on my lap and my head propped up on a pillow. i always worry that is going to give me some kind of lady cancer. freaks me out.
heads up: for anyone in Austin this weekend. or for that matter, Houston. lots of racing going on and will be capped off with a moonlite cruze monday eve. get yoself outside and on a bike if you can. you wont regret it i bet.
somebody just crossed fixedgear riding off their list - $100 bianchi pista on sale at craigs list for anyone needing some inexpensive wheels.
here is bruce on his new moyers at the capital a couple weeks ago after an evening with friends at polvos. texas is big. and margaritas are good.

I'm only zestfully clean between the hours of 7:00 AM and Noon. The rest of the day I'm covered in a thin layer of bicycle induced sweat; a state that I'm quite accustomed to. Sometimes I wonder how I smell to others though...
My shirts stink too, even after they're laundered. Bleach takes the stink away, but also fades my clothes.
Cool photo of the Capitol building.
Borax will kill the smell on clothes. Just grind it up really fine so it doesn't clog your washer. The only problem is that it's toxic and has to be to work.
It works because the smell is coming from the waste products of bacteria (I think it's bacteria, might be mold) that grow in the warm sweaty places on your clothes. Washing won't remove the bacteria, it just removes the smelly waste products. Borax inhibits the growth of the bacteria by interfering with their dna, a function which doesn't stop when it gets flushed down the drain.
I pack a shirt to change into at the end of my commute and live with the smell the rest of the time. Like you said, it's just part of the community.
Oh, and I should mention that synthetic fabrics are more prone to the bacteria growth. Why? I haven't the faintest idea, maybe natural fibers have a built in resistance or something.
Gold Bond...
Febreeze...
but
once you stink once
the damage is done
go ahead and carry your essence with you again
as some will come to expect it
amen. stinky is good! :)
it is like gwadzilla said, essence.
according to the sweat article on howstuffworks, perspiration only stinks because of bacteria on your skin and hair. if you were clean before you ride, your sweat will not smell. try it.
Try Head & Shoulders. It works for stinky forest-trekking sweat.
And a little baking soda in the synthetics followed by a proper wash should do the job.
