tell them how you really feel TODAY

big day at the capitol. and please if you are local. take a few moments to exercise your rights, speak your mind and hopefully get laws passed that help our community. its not hard. 15minutes TOPS. thanks for helping....

Safe Passing Bill, HB 1790 - The Safe Passing Bill would require a motorist to give at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist and would require a commercial vehicle to give at least six feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist.

Approximately 50 cyclists per year are killed in bicycle-automobile crashes in Texas. About 40% of those are killed by motorists traveling in the same direction. Most of those 20 deaths per year could be prevented if this law were enacted and obeyed by motorists.

Call and email your Texas State Representative today.

1. Find out who that is here.

2. That page will give you their contact information. Email and phone their office. You can say as much as you like, or simply state that you are in favor of Safe Passing Bill HB 1790. maybe a promise of homemade cookies would help too.

This is another that is up at 2pm today. If you feel strongly about this issue also, here's your chance. Dog fighting goes on in and outside of Austin to this day. some people breed pitbulls specifically for this reason. some people also steal family pets as bait for these fights.

on my ride the other day out in creedmore, i saw 3 beautiful pitbull puppy teenagers romping across the yard close to the road off leash with no fence. these dogs were not vicious they were young and playful. it killed me to see them unprotected to anyone with a evil mind to pick up and use for ill will. i suppose that's kinda a different issue -- loose dogs in the country -- yet, its not uncommon for dog fight people to pick up exactly these kinds of dogs for their ugly games. i wanted to stuff them in my pocket and take them home with me.

HB 916 (our Dog Fighting Bill) - HB 916 strengthens the laws against illegal dog fighting by increasing the penalties for the crimes of dog fighting and attending dog fighting exhibitions. It increases the penalty for causing one dog to fight with another dog from a Class A misdemeanor to a state jail felony (this change makes the penalty for this offense consistent with the penalty for animal fighting in Section 42.09(a)(6) of the Penal Code); and increases the penalty for attending a dog fighting exhibition from a Class C misdemeanor to a Class A misdemeanor.

1. call, write, fax or email each member of the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee and ask them to SUPPORT HB 916. CONTACT INFO HERE.

from news release:

Dog fighting has been illegal in Texas for many years. Despite that fact, these illegal dog fighting exhibitions are on the rise. Why?

Because apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators is extremely difficult under our existing statutes and the penalties when prosecution is successful are too light to be a deterrent.

Dog fighting is not only a cruel and barbaric activity in and of itself, but it is almost always accompanied by other illegal activities such as gambling, money laundering, drugs, firearms, alcohol and gang fights.

Tragically, young children are most always present and witness the violence of dog fighting.

Many family pets* are stolen as "training bait" for fighting dogs. The pets are stolen, muzzled and tied to a tree or stake and fighting dogs are then turned looseto maul them.

Dogs trained to fight are a danger to humans ˆ in particular children.

Every year thousands of people are attacked and killed or seriously injured by dogs and the most vicious and serious attacks are by dogs trained to fight.

Acknowledging the cruelty and other dangerous and illegal activities associated with dog fighting, federal law prohibits the transportation of a dog across state lines for the purpose of dog fighting.

Paul Dorn has an interesting argument about these 3-foot passing laws. He writes, "The vehicle code is a relatively poor method for regulating motorist behavior. Most motorists base their driving on road conditions, traffic, weather, visibility, prevailing speeds, presence of enforcement, etc.--and not on the minutiae of traffic law. Provide wide, straight roads, motorists will go faster. Better road design--generally summed up as "complete streets"--is a far superior way of encouraging respectful behavior by motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians--regardless of the presence of cops. ... Demands for greater law enforcement are particularly frightening in this post-9/11 era of diminished civil and individual rights and a creeping police state. More cops will also likely mean more attention toward suspected violations by bicyclists, teenagers, minorities--and not simply motorist infractions."

On the one hand I agree with fritz, legislation probably won't change peoples behavior much. On the other I think it sends the right message.

Dog fighting!!? You're joking. I like to think that I'm pretty worldly but that surprised me. The mindset that goes along with thinking that's entertainment is deeply frightening.
